This High River Hot Air Balloon Festival is a Must-do in September

The Heritage Inn Hot Air Balloon Festival is right around the corner - that means it’s time to start planning this adventure where you can see hot air balloons soar in the sky, just outside of Calgary. It’s an incredible adventure to see the sky filled with hot air balloons, and one of the most magical fall experiences we’ve had with our children near Calgary. The balloon festival is a must-do, to find magic close to home this fall in Alberta.

The Heritage Inn Hot Air Balloon Festival hits High River September 27, 2023 to October 1, 2023, giving you four full days to watch hot air balloons soar over High River, meet a ballon pilot from Calgary, the USA and even Europe. There is no cost associated with coming to watch the launch of the balloons, or attend the popular balloon glow event.

Here are the parts of the High River Hot Air Balloon Festival you’re not going to want to miss:

Balloon Glow September 29, 5-9pm
The Balloon Glow is a fun way to explore hot air balloons, up close. You can see the balloons inflated (from a safe distance) and watch them inflated from the ground. The balloons are inflated, and tethered to the ground for an up-close experience, where you can walk around, see the balloons and meet the pilots. Before the main event, you can take part in family friendly activities, music and even walk in the balloon. Find the site for this fun event, here.

Here’s what you should know before you go:

  • Visit the website for any final schedule changes, or any adverse weather that can affect the schedule of the balloon festival. The decision to fly the balloons may be made at the last moment, important to know if you’re coming from out of town.

  • Spectator parking is available on the residential streets near the launch site. You can view the map on the festival website, here.  There will be a designated accessible parking section on the west end of Macleod Trail SW.

  • Arriving 15-30 minutes ahead of the scheduled Fiesta Flight time is recommended to get the best experience, but keep in mind the festival can be very busy - and therefore you’re going to want to arrive early.

  • While spectators cannot access the launch field, watching launches from outside the perimeter still offers a very up close and exciting experience. Where should you view the festival? Viewing on the south and east side of the perimeter is at field level. Viewing on the west and north side of the perimeter is above field level on the berm path.

You can learn more about the festival and about hot air balloons in general at www.heritageinninternationalballoonfestival.com.
